It will not sit idle when the fundamental rights of citizens are infringed:John Brittas MP

MP John Brittas, petitioner against Pegasus, welcomed the Supreme Court decision to setting up of Experts Committee to probe the allegations. The verdict is crucial and one that bolsters democratic system, said John Brittas. In a case where the central government played hide-and-seek, the Committee will now pull up underlying truths.

As a petitioner, whole heartedly welcome the SC verdict on Pegasus. SC has preserved its glory and unequivocally made it clear that it will not sit idle when the fundamental rights of citizens are infringed. He tweets on Twitter

The assumption was growing that any one’s privacy could be pried into in the name of national security. The SC verdict now has rendered a fitful blow to that belief. The court’s ruling adds lusture to its earlier judgment upholding right to privacy as fundamental right of citizens, said Brittas.

I am a member of Parliament, but more than that, I feel I am a journalist. I have been in journalism for the last 30 years, and I think that the Pegasus issue is eating into the vital organs of democracy. For a week now, we have been trying to shake the indolence of the government, trying to extract a statement from the government as to whether they have bought the Pegasus spyware or they haven’t. So far, the government has been evading this and they have not spoken categorically in the reply to the parliament. In this context, I had only one option — to seek the help of the Supreme Court. I filed a writ requesting the court to go for a special investigation team (SIT) investigation, monitored completely by the Supreme Court to ensure that the truth is found. He said to hindustantimes.
