Hijab Row : All Petitions Questioning Ban Dismissed

The Karntaka High Court Bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Ashwathi,  on Monday dismissed all petitions seeking to repeal ban on wearing head scarves(hijab), signature of Muslim community,  in schools.

The Bench in its ruling said : Hijab is not an integral part of  Islam; students cannot oppose uniform code; the government wields  right to implement restriction.

The petition claiming  wearing of hijab as fundamental right was filed by Muslim girls, joined by various groups.  The court heard both sides over 12 days in the case.

The Hijab-centric row erupted early this Jan when Government PU College in Udupi barred six girls wearing hijab from attending the school. The girls staged a sit-in protest over the action and the controversy snowballed into for and against protests surruounding the attire.
