Assam flood situation worsens, IAF conducts 250 sorties

The flood situation in Assam remains grim as the state is heading towards the second week of incessant rains with 30 districts reporting heavy rainfall. With over 54 lakh people affected, 12 people lost their lives on Thursday taking the total death toll to 107. Barpeta and Nagaon districts have witnessed immense flooding with over 10 lakh and 5.03 lakh people being displaced. Silchar, the 2nd largest city of Assam is also reeling under immense floods, facing problems of food and water shortage. Approximately 2.8 lakh people in the district are stranded without any shelter or electricity for the past few days.

The district administration said that Assam has never seen such a disaster before and they are ready to fight “till the last moment”.They are relentlessly trying to evacuate people from the worst affected areas of Silchar and adjoining areas, providing all the basic amenities. The chief minister of the state, Himanta Biswa Sarma visited several relief camps and announced that the IAF will be transporting around 1 lakh drinking water bottles every day. The IAF has already done over 250 sorties as part of the rescue mission.

Meanwhile, Prime minister Modi through his recent tweet mentioned that “the Central Government is continuously monitoring the situation in Assam and is working closely with the state government to provide all possible assistance to overcome this challenge”. Army and NDRF teams have also been deployed who are conducting evacuation operations in the flood-hit areas.
