Malaysia Open: P.V. Sindhu wins, Nehwal loses first round

Two Olympic medallists, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu playing in the Malaysia Open Super 750 tournament in Kuala Lumpur had different results after their match on Wednesday. Sindhu gave a fine performance against Thailand’s world number 10 Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-13 21-17 and advanced to the second round. Meanwhile, the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, Saina Nehwal lost at 11-21 17-21 to the American badminton player Iris Wang in 37 minutes.

All eyes were upon the Padma Bhushan awardee Sindhu who seeded seventh and set up a clash with the Thai player, Phittayaporn Chaiwan, who is known for the junior event tournament and a part of the bronze medal-winning team at the Uber Cup in Bangkok last month. With just about a month left for the 2022 commonwealth games, top Indian badminton players have been seen playing in the Malaysia Open tournament this year.

Previously, on Tuesday, HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty progressed to the second round during the singles and doubles matches. The men’s doubles duo will be facing Goh/Izzuddin of Malaysia in the upcoming match.
