Random RT-PCR tests of 2% international passengers to be taken: Centre orders

As India witnesses a steep rise in COVID cases, the states have once again geared up to contain the spread of coronavirus by asking the public to strictly adhere to covid protocols. The Centre has ordered the states and union territories to conduct random RT-PCR tests of 2 percent of incoming passengers from other countries and send the positive samples for genome sequencing. This notice is issued after India started reporting more than 10,000 cases consistently over the past few days.

In view of the current situation, the Union health secretary, Rajesh Bhushan also advised the states to implement the revised strategy focusing on early detection and strictly monitoring the epidemiological profile of admitted patients. “This will help to identify at an early stage any out-of-the-ordinary or different clinical presentation of the patients”, he added.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India inoculated over 13 Lakh beneficiaries against the virus as of June 28. All in all, India has achieved the feat of administering 1,97,46,57,138 total doses of the vaccine. Thus, the Health Ministry has advised states to rapidly accelerate the vaccination coverage, especially for the elderly population in order to prevent the surge of COVID-19.
