World Social Media Day 2022: A brief history and Significance

“We get to live in a time that we get to use social media as a tool.” There is absolutely no doubt in the fact that social media has become an indispensable part of our lives. The human nature to communicate and make new discoveries has ultimately led us into the world of networking that we live in today. The evolution of social media started with the advent of the telegraph machine, invented way back in 1884. Then comes one of the greatest inventions of mankind, the internet, a result of a small experiment conducted as part of a military venture.

In 1997, this globally connected network system gave rise to the first-ever social media network, Six degrees where users could create profiles, upload photographs, and connect with people. Then comes, Friendster (2002), which brought the idea of social networking to the masses attracting millions of users and showing that social media could be a platform to make new friends.

With roughly over a billion active users, Facebook, now known as Meta was introduced by a college student Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates on February 4th, 2004 launched solely with the purpose of allowing people to build a community. Soon after, Youtube was created and launched becoming the most popular platform to share video content. Slowly, Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp, and Linkedin came across as universal tools introducing new trends and technological advancements allowing people to stay connected at any time of the day.

Statistics show that the number of people using social media has reached 3.5 billion worldwide. The average time spent by a person texting or surfing through these sites is 3 hours and around 60 billion messages are sent on Whatsapp and Facebook messengers on a daily basis. Approximately, 95 million images are uploaded on Instagram every day. This report is enough to show the power that social media has in creating and facilitating the flow of information among communities.
