Multiplatinum R&B singer Robert Sylvester Kelly, commonly known as R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years of jail time on Wednesday for exploiting his economic stature and fame for racketeering and sex crimes. The current ruling has come out for the 55-year-old singer, nine months after being convicted of sex trafficking crimes.
U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly in the Brooklyn Federal Court told Kelly, “This case is not about sex. It’s about violence, cruelty, and control. You left in your wake a trail of broken lives.” She also said how the singer had used sex to make the victims do horrifying things and to burden them with sexually transmitted diseases.
This is not the first time that R.Kelly had faced sexual allegations against him. The singer – well known for his hit ‘I believe I can fly’ – has been confronted with sexual abuse by the law for the past 2 decades. In September 2021, Kelly was charged with one count of racketeering and 8 counts of violating the Mann Act – prohibition of transportation of people across state lines for prostitution. All these allegations have led to the recent sentencing in New York court. Apart from this, he is also facing trial in Chicago on child sex images and obstruction charges.
Although Federal Prosecutors had recommended that Kelly should serve more than 25 years in prison, his legal team pushed for reducing the sentence to 10 years, which is the mandatory minimum for his conviction. Jurors at the trial heard how the singer had been trafficking women between different US states, with the help of his assistants, managers, security guards, and more of his followers.
In August, the singer will go on trial once more—this time in Chicago—on allegations of obstruction and child sex imagery. He will also be charged with sexual abuse in courts in Minnesota and Illinois.
