World’s biggest chocolate plant halts production; Salmonella bacteria found

The world’s biggest chocolate plant, run by Swiss giant Barry Callebaut in the Belgian town, Wieze, halts production as they find salmonella bacteria contaminating the chocolate.

The production caters liquid chocolate in wholesale batches to 73 clients making confectionaries. “All products manufactured since the test have been blocked,” spokesman Korneel Warlop said. He also added that most of the products that were found to be contaminated had not left the premises, and are still on site.

The business has contacted all of its customers and requested that they not ship any items that they have created using chocolate produced at the Wieze plant in Flanders, northwest of Brussels, since June 25. Belgium’s food safety agency AFSCA has been informed and a spokesman told AFP it had opened an investigation.

Many businesses in the food sector, including industry behemoths like Hershey, Mondelez, Nestle, or Unilever, purchase cocoa and chocolate goods from the Swiss company Barry Callebaut. The company was the global leader in the industry, with 2.2 million tonnes of revenue during the 2020–2021 fiscal year. The group, whose headquarters are in Zurich, recorded a net profit of 384.5 million Swiss francs ($402 million) over the previous fiscal year.
