Shall Forge Broad Secular Alliance To Defeat BJP : Yechury

CPI(M) will raise a broad secular alliance – one that would protect the country’s constitution and democracy said CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. State-level alliances and poll-time pacts could effectively defeat the BJP, said Yechury, speaking at the press conference briefing decisions in the two-day meeting held of the Polit Bureau.

While CPI(M)’s independent strength shall be beefed up, a broad united alliance shall also be formed to whip up the prowess of other Left and democratic forces, the Polit Bureau decided. It shall be endeavored to bring together all secular forces to protect the country’s democracy, citizens’ freedoms, and the secular nature of the Indian Republic. Post changes happening to political dimensions in  Bihar, efforts toward the unification of secular Opposition forces have gained momentum.

Across  States, varied political parties are positioned in leading efforts to defeat the BJP. In Tamil Nadu, the front for defeating BJP is led by DMK. In Kerala where BJP is nearly irrelevant, it is LDF and UDF that contest one another. In Telangana, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has initiated measures to keep BJP at bay. In Bengal, Trinamool Congress is up against BJP but its own anti-people ways cannot be ignored.

Discussions to form alternate governments at the national level must be held after elections. Since the Emergency of 1977, forging fronts to form an alternate government has typically been worked out after elections. So it did in 1996, 1998, and 2004, said Sitaram Yechury in the briefing.
